5 tips to reduce stress when stress is unavoidable….
Reducing stress when it's unavoidable can be challenging, but there are strategies you can use to help manage and cope with stress effectively and become more resilient to it. Here are five evidence-based ways to do so:
Mindfulness Meditation: Practicing mindfulness meditation can help you stay present in the moment and reduce the mental and emotional impact of stress. Regular meditation can improve your ability to manage stress and promote a sense of calm.
Deep Breathing Exercises: Deep breathing exercises, such as diaphragmatic breathing or the 4-7-8 technique, can help calm the nervous system and reduce stress. Taking slow, deep breaths can have an immediate calming effect. If you can, close your eyes. Breathe in through your nose to the count of four. Hold the breath to the count of seven. Exhale through your mouth to the count of eight.
Physical Activity: Regular exercise is one of the most effective stress reducers. Physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Even a short walk or a quick workout can help alleviate stress.
Healthy Eating: As a clinical nutritionist, I stress the importance of a balanced diet and can help you plan this. Consuming a variety of nutrient-rich foods can help your body better cope with stress. Avoid excessive caffeine and ditch that sugar, as they can exacerbate stress.
Social Support: Talking to friends, family, or a counsellor can provide emotional support during stressful times. Sharing your feelings and concerns with someone you trust can be therapeutic and reduce feelings of isolation. Spend more time with people who make you feel happy!
Remember that what works best for you may vary depending on your individual preferences and the specific sources of your stress.
